The Commonwealth Managers Association (CMA), the alumni association for the Commonwealth Management Institute supported by the Grace E. Harris Leadership Institute (GEHLI), recently convened for its 2025 Annual Meeting—a powerful, in-person event designed to equip Virginia’s public sector leaders with the tools and inspiration to “Level Up Your Skills.” Held on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, at the Virginia Information Technologies Agency (VITA) headquarters in Richmond, this year’s theme, “From Now to Next: Level Up Your Skills,” set the tone for a day full of innovative learning, meaningful networking, and career development.
The day kicked off with registration and morning treats, followed by energizing icebreakers to build camaraderie among attendees. CMA members then dove into a hands-on Ideation Workshop using LEGO® Serious Play, led by Cael Parker, adjunct professor at the VCU da Vinci Center for Innovation. Participants used LEGO bricks to visually represent ideas around reskilling, upskilling, and future-readiness, sparking creativity and collaborative thinking in unexpected ways.
After a networking business meeting over lunch, the afternoon session featured Andrea P. Simmons, M.Ed., Program Manager of Competency and Career Development at VDOT, who delivered a dynamic message, “Unleashing Your Personal Power is the New Upskilling and Reskilling.” Simmons challenged attendees to reframe their approach to professional growth, emphasizing the importance of self-awareness, confidence, and intentional development.
The event concluded with a thought-provoking panel discussion featuring high-level leaders from across Virginia agencies who shared insights from their own leadership journeys:
- Demetrios “Mitch” Melis, Commissioner, Virginia Employment Commission
- Michelle Prosser, Director of Talent Development & Learning, Virginia Housing
- Shakema Sander, Deputy Director of Administration, Department of Housing and Community Development
- Robert Lewis, Director of Planning & Finance, Department of Wildlife Resources
Each panelist offered actionable advice on upskilling, reskilling, and navigating change, drawing on their diverse experiences to inspire attendees to embrace continuous learning and leadership with purpose.
The 2025 CMA Annual Meeting was a resounding success, drawing a vibrant mix of alumni and current leaders across the Commonwealth. By combining innovative practices with timeless leadership principles, the event embodied the spirit of GEHLI—empowering Virginia’s public sector professionals to lead boldly, adapt strategically, and grow continuously.
