Sunday, February 23, 2014, Sixth Mount Zion Baptist Church honored a trio of black luminaries at its Founder’s Day celebration.
"The church annually remembers its founder, the Rev. John Jasper, a famous slave preacher and later free preacher.
This year’s Jasper Trailblazer award winners are Grace E. Harris, Christopher B. Howard, and Willie E. Lanier.
Harris was the highest-ranking woman and the highest-ranking African-American in Virginia Commonwealth University’s history, serving as provost and vice president for academic affairs and twice as acting president."
