Executive Director Susan Gooden, has been elected the next president of the American Society for Public Administration (ASPA).
Gooden, who is a former National Council representative and a current Fellow of the National Academy of Public Administration, was elected as the next president of ASPA in December. The largest and most prominent professional association for public administration, the society boasts more than 8,000 members and is dedicated to advancing the art, science, teaching and practice of public and non-profit administration. Per ASPA’s bylaws, Gooden will serve as vice president for one year starting in 2014, president-elect for one year and will serve as president in 2016.
In February, Gooden released a new book entitled Race and Social Equity: A Nervous Area of Government that examines the public sector’s ‘nervousness’ with racial equity and the consequences of that discomfort in reducing disparities in public management and organizational behavior. The text draws upon applied examples at the federal, state, and local level that are ‘ahead of the curve’ and asserts the role of public administration programs in engaging disparities head-on.
Since writing the book Gooden has received substantial interest, lecturing at Syracuse University Florida International University and North Carolina State University as a visiting scholar.
